Is it time for plastic surgery?
The timing of body-contouring (plastic/reconstructive) surgery is truly a personal decision; however, a few important facts may help to guide you.
The best time for surgery is when you have reached a weight-loss plateau near your goal. You can minimize risks of infection and impaired wound healing by avoiding tobacco and ensuring a high-protein diet (at least 60 grams daily). The most common body-contouring procedures following Bariatric Surgery are:
Panniculectomy – simple removal of the excess skin beneath the belly button
Abdominoplasty – in addition to removal of excess skin, tightening of the abdominal wall in vertical and horizontal directions
Lower Body Lift – removal of the “saddlebag deformity” around the thighs and buttock lift
Thigh Lift – as described
Brachioplasty – removal of excess skin from underneath the upper arm
The most common procedures covered by the insurance companies are Panniculectomy and Abdominoplasty. The most common reason for coverage is intertrigo (inflammation caused by rubbing of the skin) that does not get better with medication.
Body contouring surgery may help with body image, clothing selection, and even daily living. Remember, however, that surgery trades “skin for scar,” and it is important to discuss this with your surgeon.
