Misleadingly Healthy
These foods are often thought of as “healthy,” when in fact they are NOT!
Granola: Calorically dense and full of sugar, eating a mere ½ c granola will cost you 200-300 calories, around 15 grams of fat and close to 15g sugar too. That’s not a lot of nutritional bang for the amount of calories it will cost you. Skip it!
Trail mix: While it’s true that the nuts in a trail mix contribute a little protein, the overall calorie cost is not worth it. ½ cup trail mix will cost you an average of 350 calories , 22g fat, and around 20g sugar. It’s not worth it to get a mere 10g protein. Skip it!
Yogurt covered pretzels: I’m not sure why these get a healthy stamp of approval, but they seem to! WRONG! 12 yogurt pretzels will cost you 280 calories, 12 g fat, and 28 g sugar. Definitely skip these!
So what’s a person to snack on you ask? How about:
- String cheese (nonfat/lowfat)
- Nonfat greek yogurt
- Turkey lunch meat
- Jerky
- Lowfat cottage cheese
- Fresh fruit: apples, berries, oranges, tangerines, pears, graperfruit, etc….
- Fresh veggies: cherry tomatoes, snap peas, raw green beans, jicama, radishes, baby carrots, celery stuffed with wedge of laughing cow lite cheese, etc….
