How to Make Plain Yogurt Taste Better

If the idea of plain yogurt makes you want to run and cry…

It’s likely you’ve heard the suggestion to use plain yogurt or plain greek yogurt because it’s a “good source of protein.”

However, if you just can’t stomach the plain yogurt, keep in mind you can always FLAVOR it yourself!

You can add vanilla flavor in one of two ways:

1. Vanilla Extract

Add a dash of pure vanilla (vs imitation vanilla extract) extract to your plain yogurt and stir vigorously. Take a taste and adjust as desired.

2.  Use a Real Vanilla Bean (There is no match!)

 Step 1

Place the long, thick vanilla bean – sometimes called a pod – on a cutting board. Slice off each end with a paring knife. Carefully slice through the vanilla bean lengthwise, but only halfway through the depth, to reveal the tiny black seeds inside.

Step 2

Scrape some of the seeds into the plain yogurt and stir thoroughly. In general, a 2-inch segment of vanilla bean equals 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract.

Tips

  • If it’s easier for you to handle, cut a vanilla bean in half and work with one-half of a pod at a time.
  • Wrap unused vanilla beans in plastic wrap or wax paper and store them in an airtight plastic or glass container.

To make other flavors of yogurt, simply use any of the array of extracts you can find in the baking aisle near the vanilla extract:

  • Almond extract
  • Banana extract
  • Cinnamon extract
  • Coconut extract
  • Hazelnut Flavor extract
