Duodenal Switch

The Duodenal Switch (also called the Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch) is a weight loss surgery that involves both stomach remodeling as well as an aggressive intestinal bypass. Nothing is removed from your body. The operation is sometimes performed in two stages for very heavy or high-risk patients.

The stomach remodeling involves removing about 75% of the stomach, similar to a Sleeve Gastrectomy. The intestinal bypass is more aggressive than in Gastric Bypass surgery, and is designed to create tremendous malabsorption. Due to the increased risk of Duodenal Switch surgery it is performed less often than the other weight loss surgery options.
